Some say that art is just a “thing”. And we don’t need more “things” in our lives.
I would argue that art isn’t a static inanimate thing. It was created by someone who felt the need to express something, to show you something, to give you a piece of themselves, and for you to share something in common. Even if the artist was trying to express something different than what you felt, art is so much more than just a thing; it’s a shared experience between you and the artist.
I’m an artist. I like to make things and show them to people. Sometimes people buy my work. The cycle goes something like this: See. Make. Share. Repeat. Every now and then someone says, “Hey, I really like that! I’ll buy it!” and it makes me so happy to think that a little piece of me is now in someone’s home because they enjoyed what I did.
Yes, but why? Why put all that time and effort into making art?
Because I have to. It’s a visceral need to make something and then share it. When I take photos it’s about seeing and capturing beautiful things or moments and it’s always something I want to share with the world. Keeping it all to myself isn’t as fulfilling.
Why do people need to buy art? Can’t they just go to a museum?
If you’re lucky enough to be somewhere where there are galleries and museums, you can experience some really amazing art. You can explore how different styles and mediums make you feel and ponder what you like (or don’t like) about a piece.
But the experience doesn’t need to stop there. You can choose art for your space. Surround yourself with things that make you feel something. It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated—maybe it’s a color or texture that draws your eye. And when art is intentionally chosen for a space, it adds to the experience in that space.
My wish for you: a better space
When you walk into a room, what do you want to feel? Peace, tranquility, vibrant energy, joy? Choose art based on that—on what you feel—and you will instantly create a better space. Plus, you’ll make an artist happy!
